Blacklisted from the PTA: New Book Offers Laugh Out Loud Humor About Motherhood, Marriage, and Surviving the Suburbs

Rogers, AR (PRWEB) June 29, 2011

Between diapers, playdates, and a never-ending schedule of birthday parties, it?s a wonder parents have time and energy to procreate. Throw in cliquish PTA queens, complex neighborhood politics, and the fine art of lawn maintenance, and you start to understand why suburban parents actually crave quiet desperation?so long as it comes with a nap.

Blacklisted from the PTA (Jupiter Press, imprint of Wyatt-MacKenzie, July 2011) is an irreverent look at motherhood and the modern family. Humorist Lela Davidson (http://leladavidson.com/) has captured the attention of magazine editors across the United States and Canada with these stories of family life. And now they?re coming to a bookstore near you.

In Blacklisted from the PTA Lela takes you to Mexican bars, the hockey rinks of St. Louis, ski slopes near Santa Fe, shopping in Dallas, and even introduces you to a few strippers?the novices on the playgrounds of New York City, and the pros in Vegas. Lela says what the rest of us are thinking. Her hilarious observations and subtle satire are always spot on. She?s not afraid to reveal her screw-ups, along with fleeting delusional moments when she honestly believes she is the best mom ever.

????Writer Mama author Christina Katz (http://christinakatz.com/) described the book as ?Carrie Bradshaw meets Desperate Housewives.?

????iVillage (http://www.ivillage.com/) Chief Correspondent Kelly Wallace calls Blacklisted from the PTA laugh out loud funny and says it?s a ?truly entertaining read for any exhausted mom or mom-to-be.?

????BlogHer?s (http://www.blogher.com/) Rita Arens says ?Lela Davidson?s collection is witty and light. Perfect for red lights.?

????Humorist and Mouthy Housewife (http://www.mouthyhousewives.com/) Wendi Aarons says Blacklisted from the PTA is ?Funny, witty, insightful and the perfect read when you?re hiding in a bathroom stall during a PTA meeting.?

????In the book?s foreword, Life?s Too Short to Fold Fitted Sheets author Lisa Quinn (http://livewellnetwork.com/Home-With-Lisa-Quinn/7624608) calls Davidson self-deprecating, honest, and funny. ?Lela Davidson opens up so we can too. You?re going to love it."

Whether failing at cloth diaper origami or smug in knowledge that her children have never consumed a PopTart, Davidson assures parents they are not alone, and that it?s okay to laugh?at yourself, and at your kids. These are the stories of Everyparent?even if we don?t always tell them out loud. Each of these 62 essays can be read in under five minutes for a quick laugh?either with or at the author.

Lela Davidson is the Managing Editor of ParentingSquad.com and the Associate Editor of Peekaboo magazine. Her writing is featured regularly in family and parenting magazines throughout the country, and in Chicken Soup for the Soul: New Moms.

Blacklisted from the PTA is available in paperback from all major online retailers and in Kindle from Amazon.com - just in time to read at the pool!

Free Spirit Publishing Releases Tenth Book in the Award-Winning Toddler Tools? Series

Minneapolis, MN (PRWEB) November 02, 2011

Free Spirit Publishing presents ON-THE-GO TIME ($ 7.95), the tenth book in the award-winning Toddler Tools series of board books by author Elizabeth Verdick and illustrator Marieka Heinlen. ON-THE-GO TIME was written to help take the hassle out of shopping and running errands with little ones. In the book, toddlers learn simple tools and encouragement to keep moving, cope with the changing scenes, and be super helpers in the car, at the store or library, and on the road. What do they do when they?re on-the-go? Listen, follow along, and even lend a hand. If they?re struggling with transition times, or feeling disappointed or overstimulated along the way, they can take deep breaths to calm down.

The Toddler Tools series offers a fresh look at the times and transitions all toddlers face daily, giving young children coping skills to ease transition times and handle everyday routines with confidence and cooperation. In ON-THE-GO TIME, MEALTIME, BEDTIME, CALM-DOWN TIME, MANNERS TIME, SHARING TIME, NAPTIME, LISTENING TIME, BYE-BYE TIME, and CLEAN-UP TIME (Free Spirit Publishing, $ 7.95 each), Heinlen?s signature illustrations?vibrant color interwoven with vintage fabrics?are the perfect complement to Verdick?s rhythmic text.

Each book also contains a section of tips for parents and caregivers. Here are few tips from ON-THE-GO TIME to keep toddlers moving:

????Keep to a schedule. Make it easier on everyone by running errands or scheduling appointments in between your child?s meals and naps. This will ensure your child is rested, fed, and ready to go. Don?t try to cram too many stops into one trip?this often leads to frustration, tears, or meltdowns.
????Make a ?go-time? list. Your child will do a lot better on-the-go if you?ve made a visual schedule ahead of time. On a piece of paper, draw a representation of each place you?ll be going: a book for the library, an apple for the grocery store, a stamp for the post office. Then your child will know what to expect and look forward to.
????Get ready, get set. Before you leave home, give your child a chance to use the bathroom, get a drink and snack to take along, and choose a favorite toy to bring. Make sure you always have a handy stash of diapers and wipes, underpants and extra clothes, raingear, juice boxes, small toys, and other essential ?go-time? supplies. It?s helpful if your child eats beforehand or brings along a snack?especially if you?re running several errands. Full tummies mean calmer children!
????Prepare for challenges. You can use every one of these tips and still have one of those terrible outings where your child melts down in public. What to do? Take a few deep breaths and have your child do the same. Avoid yelling, making threats, or bribing your child with treats. Sometimes, it?s best to simply pick up your child and leave until you?re both calmer and can return to the scene. (You wouldn?t be the first parent or caregiver who had to leave a cart full of groceries behind.)

On-the-Go Time ISBN 978-1-57542-379-1

$ 7.95 / Board book / 24 pp. / color illust. / 7" x 7" / for toddlers

Environmental Children?s Book Debuts Nationally Amid Tough Economic Climate

Richmond, VA (PRWEB) November 09, 2011

Aside from educational benefits inherent in a book like Rigsby, this launch paints a new and inspiring business portrait for creatives and start-ups. Leveraging strategic technology along with project and social outlets like Kickstarter and Twitter, Jennifer Nutter, owner of Baby Sister Books and Rigsby's creator, hopes to spread the anti-litter message while maximizing aspects of this tough economy to start a publishing business.

Because of (not despite) economic challenges, Jennifer believes that this project launch is more feasible.

Jennifer says, "There are many affordable yet valuable business resources, lease and purchase bargains, new office-share arrangements which foster creative collaboration. All these are benefits for industrious business owners. Ingenuity is fueling the trends and attitudes I see among entrepreneurs now."

Add mobile business technology to this equation and the current start-up formula strengthens. "Smartphone Apps for business allow offices and professionals to 'travel light' and reap more results with less expensive software and without cumbersome hardware." For example, Jennifer explains further, "I use an iPhone App to scan, sign, send and organize documents. Instead of an expensive, space wasting piece of hardware, I use a tiny device for many tasks to do what I need, stay on budget, and happily increase flexibility." She also adds, ?It's the epitome of doing more with less?a key attitude at the heart of environmental stewardship."

Capitalizing on these various aspects while focused on an important mission, Jennifer aims her launch squarely at litter prevention because according to her, "it is a form of pollution that is clearly without murky debate 100% avoidable and preventable. We just need to send the message early and to many kids. For our litter book to do this, we need backers at Kickstarter so we can get the ball rolling in the right direction."

Geared primarily for children ages 4-8, Rigsby has wider appeal due to lively illustrations and an ageless message about litter's painful effect on animals. Jennifer aims to extend the book's educational reach beyond Virginia where it was adopted in 2005 by the state's Department of Environmental Quality and sent to elementary schools across Virginia.

Baby Sister Books seeks backing to initiate Rigsby's expanded distribution to organizations across the U.S. Such funding is possible via project backers at the newly noteworthy site, Kickstarter, whose blog cites "$ 84 million in successful pledging for 2011", and provides project backers with rewards plus the pride of project success. Jennifer adds, "I want Rigsby to reach as many children as possible. The more who hear it, the more who will grow up with an intrinsic, lifelong respect for animals and our environment."

Jennifer's educational instincts are correct according to Keep America Beautiful whose "largest litter study ever conducted in the U.S" uncovered similar correlations. Their comprehensive 2009 study asserts that litter prevention relies on behavior change and "education and awareness are the bedrock tools of behavior change."
