Arizona Cardinals face the Carolina Panthers in Week 1 of the NFL season. Both teams are very different from last year when the Panthers beat the Cardinals last in the season.

Arizona Cardinals were considered the softest team in the playoffs, unable to win far from home and carrying the scars of years of ineptitude. But behind their cagey quarterback, dynamic receiver, improved defense -- and a big assist from Jake Delhomme's horrible night -- the Cardinals are a win away from the unthinkable: a berth in the Super Bowl.

Carolina Panthers vs Arizona Cardinals kick off the NFL season for both clubs on Sunday afternoon in Arizona. As a Carolina Panthers football fan since the start of the franchise, it is fairly easy to be excited about this 2011 NFL football season. Cardinals meanwhile are 3 years removed from their Superbowl appearance and their climb back to respectability continues with their home opener against the league's worst team from a year ago.

Cam Newton starts his first NFL game for the Carolina Panthers and yet it feels as though he will be dominant. Some of this is wishful thinking on my part, and I fully realize this as a fan. Still, if you watched him during the preseason games, you saw that he plays at a different level and speed than other NFL players.

Meanwhile, Newton's first target will be the Arizona Cardinals, Carolina's opening opponent in Week 1 of the 2011 regular season. Arizona was one of the worst defenses in the NFL last season, and was particularly gashed against the run.

It is somewhat comical that the 1-12 Panthers are actually favored against anyone. That being said, the 4-9 Cardinals have only won one game in their last eight outings. The Panthers have lost 10 of their 12 games they have played this season by double digit margins.

Shelves of North Carolina Food Pantry in Danger of Going Bare

For nearly 35 years, the United Community Ministries? (UCM) food pantry has provided help to those in need. Now, the food pantry is running extremely low on supplies and needs help from its neighbors to continue providing the assistance on which so many have come to rely. To aid in the effort, local law firm HensonFuerst will be hosting a food drive to benefit UCM. The food drive is going on now through July 30, when the law firm will host a special drop-off event at its office in Rocky Mount.

?Our food pantry is for those who are really in need of food, and we try not to turn away anyone in need of help,? said Leta Lacey, who oversees the food pantry. ?We are asking for your assistance to help us with any donations that you have available for us.?

?We believe in helping organizations that benefit health and community causes,? said attorney David Henson. ?When we learned that one of our local shelters is nearly out of all food and hygiene items, we immediately wanted to find a way to help.?

Items can be dropped off at the law firm?s office located at 2317 Sunset Avenue in Rocky Mount. The special drop-off event will be held on Saturday, July 30 from 8 to 11 a.m. during which people can hand their donations to volunteers without even having to get out of their cars.

All types of non-perishable food and hygiene items are needed, including:
