Arizona Cardinals face the Carolina Panthers in Week 1 of the NFL season. Both teams are very different from last year when the Panthers beat the Cardinals last in the season.

Arizona Cardinals were considered the softest team in the playoffs, unable to win far from home and carrying the scars of years of ineptitude. But behind their cagey quarterback, dynamic receiver, improved defense -- and a big assist from Jake Delhomme's horrible night -- the Cardinals are a win away from the unthinkable: a berth in the Super Bowl.

As a Carolina Panthers football fan since the start of the franchise, it is fairly easy to be excited about this 2011 NFL football season. Cardinals meanwhile are 3 years removed from their Superbowl appearance and their climb back to respectability continues with their home opener against the league's worst team from a year ago.

Cam Newton starts his first NFL game for the Carolina Panthers and yet it feels as though he will be dominant. Some of this is wishful thinking on my part, and I fully realize this as a fan. Still, if you watched him during the preseason games, you saw that he plays at a different level and speed than other NFL players.

Meanwhile, Newton's first target will be the Arizona Cardinals, Carolina's opening opponent in Week 1 of the 2011 regular season. Arizona was one of the worst defenses in the NFL last season, and was particularly gashed against the run.

It is somewhat comical that the 1-12 Panthers are actually favored against anyone. That being said, the 4-9 Cardinals have only won one game in their last eight outings. The Panthers have lost 10 of their 12 games they have played this season by double digit margins.
